Hawaiian Dredging
Dredge "Hawaiian Dredging"

HONOLULU IN 1902

Island beauty abounds. Native Hawaiians adjust to growing westernization. Commerce shifts from decades of whaling and trading to greater business diversity. On Waikiki Beach, the renowned Halekulani Hotel—we rebuilt the 5 star hotel in 1982—was a beachfront home with five bungalow rentals. The gracious Moana Hotel had just opened. A young entrepreneur bought a used dredge, formed Hawaiian Dredging Company, and quickly won the contract to widen the main channel of Pearl Harbor.

HAWAIIAN DREDGING'S NEXT STEPS

Additional Pearl Harbor work followed including Drydock #1 in 1909, as the company slowly expanded into general contracting work. The company’s dredge reshaped Honolulu Harbor and other harbors and waterways on the outer islands. Marshy coastal areas in Honolulu and especially Waikiki were reclaimed with dredged fill—eventually 5,000 acres of land were reclaimed which would be worth billions within several decades. General contracting overtook dredging work during the 1920s, as Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company continued to reshape Hawaii.
