All Navy munitions coming in and out of Oahu pass over the Whiskey Wharves in Pearl Harbor. This ~1.5 acre piece of real estate was ready for repair after over 60 years of heavy use. The Navy hired Hawaiian Dredging to repair the wharves without impacting shipping operations.
The work demanded skill and extreme caution to remove old structures. Crews had to drill underwater at depths greater than 30 feet around unexploded ordnance in the buried sediment. The weathered top deck, curbs, and pylons were made of timber and concrete. Their replacements were fabricated from concrete, steel, and recycled plastic. In many cases, the new structure exceeded design strength requirements.
The 16-month repair, which received the Navy’s “outstanding” performance appraisal, was proudly completed within budget and two months ahead of schedule. Equally important, Naval operations and ship replenishment scheduling were unhindered. Hawaiian Dredging is proud to have had a part in helping defend our nation.
