Having constructed the original Ala Moana Shopping Center, in phases beginning as early as 1959, Hawaiian Dredging has been called upon to perform expansions and renovations of this, the world’s largest open-air mall. The projects that have included parking expansions as well as the construction of new retail, food court, and open spaces have all been completed while the mall maintained full operations. In 1970, Hawaiian Dredging also constructed the adjacent Ala Moana Hotel, a 38-story tower with recreation deck, large lobbies, and banquet room facilities conveniently connected to the shopping center via a large walkway over the street separating the mall and the hotel.
Since the original mall construction, in keeping with the owner’s growth plans, Hawaiian Dredging has performed such major renovation and upgrade projects that have included:
* Mauka-Ewa Parking Deck (2001) – A four-level parking structure at the Mauka-Ewa corner of the shopping center comprised of approximately 1,556 parking stalls and accompanying stairways, ramps, elevators along with a security system and emergency generator.
* Makai Parking Expansion (2007) – A two-phased project adding a combined total of 325,000 square feet of parking area.
* Retail Space Expansion (2008) – Addition of 837,000 sf of floor area. The work also included a 6-story, 541,000 sf concrete structure with ground floor specialty retail spaces, a bus/trolley terminal and five levels of parking providing an additional 1,200 stalls. While performing this project, Hawaiian Dredging completed under a separate contract the three-story, 296,000 square foot shell that would be the home of the first Nordstrom store in the state.
* Center Court Re-Demise (2013) – Hawaii’s most popular outdoor stage, the Ala Moana Centerstage and the entire surrounding amenities that included the center’s largest restroom facilities, escalators, and pedestrian areas.
* Makai Market – (2014) – Major renovation of the shopping center’s food court to include decorative fixtures along with built-in tables to provide increased and varied dining accommodations for patrons.
